and we're expecting a final vote this hour. right now senators lindsey graham and john mccain are at the white house for a high level meeting on immigration, and we're watching new moves to enact serious gun safety legislation in these united united states. it's busy. but we begin with just three days left to avert the sequester spending cuts. with plenty of bluster but little progress on the budget deadlock. and today the president took his case for compromise to a part of the country where the cuts could hit the hardest. a shipyard in virginia. after touring newport news ship building, virginia's largest industrial employer, the president spoke of the devastating impact the sequester would have on jobs and on middle class families. >> that's a pretty bad name, sequester, but the effects are even worse than the name. the sequester will weaken america's economic recovery. it will weaken our military readiness. and it will weaken the basic services that the american people depend on every single day. >> and while republicans may agree to some extent that the sequester cuts will

scheduled to vote on the nomination of chuck hagel tomorrow. senator john mccain says, i will not participate in any walkout of tomorrow's committee vote, which i guess is what counts for statesmanship among republicans these days, but as to whether mr. mccain will support his one-time friend, well, that remains a bit of a mystery. >> we've still got some more information. >> are you going to support him for defense secretary? >> i will see the rest of the answers to his questions, but certainly i have very grave concerns. i think we need some more information. >> of course, senator lindsey graham brings up an excellent point, one i'm sure more republicans will soon be asking, why stop at chuck hagel? >> i don't think we should allow brennan to go forward for the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed as secretary of defense until the white house gives us an accounting. yes, i'm going to ask my colleagues just like they did with john bolten, joe biden said no confirmation without information. no confirmation without information. >> right. i mean, no one at the white hous

and then at least another two republican votes and then you have senators like john mccain saying that they are not going to back afilibustl a filibuste. so they are still confident that chuck hagel's nomination will be confirmed. you have mitch mcconnell coming out suggesting he might try to slow walk this process. majority leader harry reid saying he's not going to let that happen. again, the white house at this hour, martin, still confident that hagel will be confirmed. >> and this in the context of what happened last night. what are your sources telling you about the likelihood of the president referencing north korea and its nuclear weapons test in his speech tonight? >> reporter: well, martin, my sources are telling me it is very likely that he is going to reference what happened in north korea overnight. remember, the white house put out a statement overnight condemning the action saying that it was a highly provocative action. i can also tell you that president obama spoke to the president of south korea today. they shared their concerns about this third nuclear launch, w

saying that plan would be dead on arrival if it were presented to congress. john mccain accusing the white house of intentionally leaking that draft proposal. that's an assertion the white house has pushed back against. this is a delicate dance, martin, and this sort of ruffled feathers could give someone like marco rubio some cover to spar publicly with the president but then to continue to work on immigration reform behind the scenes and not necessarily have to own this as president obama's immigration reform proposal if, in fact, they do come up with something. i think what's significant is that after this weekend and that leaked draft proposal, no one walked away from the table. by all accounts everyone is still moving forward on immigration reform. of course, it's still an uphill battle because lawmakers are divided on some of the key issues. >> kristin, thank you. >>> coming up, herman cain was actually right about something. seriously. stay with us. so you say men are superior drivers? yeah. then how'd i get this... john mccain to bobby jindal. it all mere theatrics until we see the cuts take effect? here is the great speaker. >> -- than he is in urging his senate democrats to actually pass a plan. listen, we know there are smarter ways to cut spending and to continue to grow our economy. that's why republicans have acted twice, as kathy said, to replace the sequester with what we would argue are smarter cuts. listen, the president says we have to have another tax increation in order to avoid the sequester. well, mr. president, you got your tax increase. it's time to cut spending here in washington. instead of using our military men and women as campaign props, if the president was serious he'd sit down with harry reid and begin to address our problems. the house has acted twice. we shouldn't have to act a third time before the senate begins to do their work. >> good afternoon. we heard the president say last week that he was going to be forced because of the sequestration to let criminals loose on the street if he didn't get another tax hike. today we're hearing discussions from the secretary of h
